Steffan’s Jewellers Announces Closure After Nearly 50 Years in Northampton
Posted 4th November 2024Steffan’s Jewellers, a cherished fixture in Northampton since 1976, has announced its impending closure, marking the end of nearly five decades of trading. The farewell will commence with an exclusive closing-down sale from Saturday 9th November at 10am, featuring exceptional discounts of 50% on all fine jewellery, including diamond rings, coloured gemstones, gold, and silver pieces. The sale presents a final opportunity for customers to acquire Steffan’s distinctive jewellery, just in time for Christmas, and to bid farewell to owner Steff Suter.
In a special guest appearance, boxing legend Frank Bruno will inaugurate the event at 10am on Saturday 9th November, adding a touch of glamour to this significant moment.
Founded by local entrepreneur Steff (Stephen) Suter at the age of 24, Steffan’s has grown from humble beginnings into a prominent destination. Reflecting on his early days, Steff shared: “I was made redundant from my previous job at a local jewellers and took the leap to open my own store across the street. In our first year, we turned over £50,000—a substantial sum back then.” This success enabled swift expansion, with Steff doubling the shop space within just 18 months.
Steff attributes his entrepreneurial spirit to his mother, who had a resilient and independent streak, having moved to England from India at 14. “My mother’s influence was profound,” he noted. “Retail was in her blood, and I inherited that passion.” His early experiences shaped his confidence and people skills, both essential in the retail world.
Steffan’s remains a true family enterprise. Steff is supported by his daughter Ellie and son Wes, while his wife Julles, a jewellery designer, has collaborated with him on many successful collections. Keith, the resident goldsmith since day one, is affectionately regarded as part of the family.
The jewellers is renowned for its exceptional customer service and striking window displays. Steff, now 73, expressed his bittersweet emotions about the closure: “I have loved every moment of running this business. Jewellery is deeply personal, and I have cherished getting to know our customers over the years. It is difficult to say goodbye, but I look forward to spending more time with my family and enjoying retirement.”
The store, fondly known as ‘Steff’s Corner’ on Abington Square, will soon close permanently. Until then, Steff invites loyal patrons and new visitors alike to experience the store one last time, sharing memories and enjoying the final, extraordinary discounts.
The closing-down sale includes 50% reductions across the jewellery range—from engagement rings and wedding bands to bracelets and necklaces—while watches will be available at 25% off. All items are offered on a first-come, first-served basis until stocks are depleted.
