You know those Sundays where you should probably do something wholesome… but end up on the sofa instead? Not this time.
Because Bands in the Park is back at Abington Park — and it’s basically your excuse to grab a picnic, round up your people and pretend you’ve got your life wonderfully together (even if it’s just for a few hours).
Kicking off on Easter Sunday, 5th April, this much-loved programme rolls right through to 27th September, bringing free live music to the park every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. Yes, free. Yes, outdoors. Yes, you’re going to want to stay longer than you planned.
Everything centres around the park’s historic bandstand, where performances run from 2pm to 5pm — that sweet spot where lunch has settled and you’re ready for a little soundtrack to your afternoon. Expect everything from brass and silver bands to choirs, singers and party bands, with plenty of local Northamptonshire talent taking the spotlight (and rightly so).
And then there are the Bank Holiday specials — because of course there are. The Park Café is once again stepping in with tribute acts, kicking things off with Tom Jones on Easter Monday (go on, try not to sing along). After that, you’ve got Buddy Holly, Elvis in May, and Neil Diamond rounding things off in August. It’s basically a greatest hits playlist, but live and with fresh air.
Opening the season on Easter Sunday is the Northampton Ukulele Group — which feels like the perfect, slightly quirky way to ease into months of music ahead. From there, it’s a steady rhythm of performances right through the summer, with just one pause on Sunday 24th May for the Rockin’ Roadrunner Festival — a brilliant, inclusive event organised by and for adults with a range of disabilities.
And here’s the thing — this isn’t new. Not even close. Bands in the Park is now in its 126th year (yes, really), which means generations have been doing exactly what you’re about to do: turning up, spreading out a blanket, and letting the music do its thing.
So bring a chair. Bring snacks. Bring that one friend who always “doesn’t like crowds” but somehow loves this sort of thing.
And make a habit of it — because the best plans are the ones you don’t have to overthink.
