Local musician Nick Penny returns to Stanwick Lakes on Thursday 3 July for a unique evening of live music inspired by the sounds of Northamptonshire’s countryside.

If you’ve ever wondered what the Nene Valley would sound like with its own soundtrack, Nick Penny has spent more than four decades creating it.

The Northampton-based writer, composer, musician and wildlife recordist is bringing his much-loved performance back to Stanwick Lakes, blending live harp, handpan and authentic birdsong recorded across Northamptonshire into an immersive evening that has been described as “absolutely unique, absolutely wonderful.”

A Northamptonshire Musician Inspired by Nature

Nick Penny is one of Northamptonshire’s best-known musicians, recognised for creating relaxing, atmospheric music inspired by the natural world.

His performances feature hundreds of hours of birdsong recordings collected throughout the Nene Valley, including the unmistakable calls of cuckoos, blackbirds and nightingales. These recordings are woven seamlessly into live performances that celebrate the wildlife many of us hear every day—but rarely stop to appreciate.

More than simply a concert, each evening is filled with stories about Nick’s lifelong fascination with birds, wildlife and the changing seasons across Northamptonshire.

Experience the Sounds of the Nene Valley

As more people look for ways to reconnect with nature, Nick’s performances offer a refreshing escape from busy modern life.

With the distinctive call of the cuckoo once again echoing around Stanwick Lakes this summer, the setting couldn’t be more fitting for an evening that celebrates the sights and sounds of one of Northamptonshire’s most beautiful outdoor spaces.

Whether you’re a fan of live music, local wildlife or simply looking for unusual things to do in Northamptonshire this July, this promises to be an unforgettable experience.
