ou know that feeling when a night out turns into a proper belly laugh marathon? That’s exactly what Northampton’s gearing up for.
This summer, the town centre is basically becoming a comedy playground, as more than 50 stand-up acts descend for the Northampton Comedy Festival — a two-month stretch of punchlines, previews and probably a few jokes that are still “finding themselves” (Edinburgh Fringe warm-ups, after all).
We’re talking familiar faces from Mock The Week, Live at the Apollo and Taskmaster. Names you’ll recognise. Names you’ll argue about in the pub. Names like Lucy Porter, Paul Foot, Mark Thomas, Paul Sinha and Rhys James — all popping into town, often testing out material before it hits the big stage in Edinburgh.
And here’s the twist: you won’t be watching them from the nosebleeds. These are intimate venues — the kind where you’re close enough to see the raised eyebrow before the punchline lands.
A town-wide laugh-in
Running from Sunday 24 May to Thursday 30 July, the festival stretches across multiple venues in the town centre, including the Albion Brewery, Cheyne Walk Club and V&B. It’s been pulled together by local promoters The Comedy Crate, with backing from Northampton Town Centre BID — a collaboration that’s clearly found its groove.
Mark Mullen, operations manager of Northampton Town Centre BID, said: “We can’t wait to bring back the Northampton Comedy Festival for a fourth successive year, building on the success of the last three festivals.
“This is an opportunity to see big names in intimate venues as they prepare their material for shows on the nation’s biggest stage. We’ve seen big crowds pack out across the town centre and we’re looking forward to Northampton coming together once more to have a laugh and a cracking night out.”
Translation? Big laughs, small rooms, and a town that knows how to show up.
Circle these dates (seriously)
If you like your comedy in bulk, there are two all-dayer events to lock into your diary — Saturday 6 June and Saturday 18 July. Across three stages at The Charles Bradlaugh, The Lamplighter and The Black Prince, 15 acts will rotate through, delivering a full day of stand-up.
Dip in and out. Stay all day. Pretend you’re a comedy critic. (No one’s stopping you.)
And for the first time, the festival is scaling up with a larger mixed bill event at Sixfields Stadium — because sometimes you just need more seats for more laughs.
Why it matters (beyond the punchlines)
There’s something quietly brilliant happening here. Northampton’s building a reputation on the comedy circuit — not just as a stop-off, but as a destination.
Mike Chase from The Comedy Crate said: “Northampton is getting a really positive reputation on the comedy circuit and events like this are showcasing what we are capable of when we all work together to produce something very special.
“This year we’ve secured some fantastic acts who will be coming to town to warm up either for Edinburgh or for their tour shows.
“We’ve kept ticket prices as low as we can so people have the chance to watch TV acts, circuit headliners and stars of the future without having to fork out too much cash at a time when we know people are watching the pennies.
“We’d encourage everyone to get behind your local independent comedy club and make this a festival to remember.”
In other words: big talent, fair prices, and a proper push to support local culture (with a side of laughter).
So… are you going?
Because this isn’t just another event listing. It’s your excuse to book that night out, try somewhere new, and maybe discover your next favourite comedian before they’re selling out arenas.
Tickets and full listings are available at www.thecomedycrate.com.
Go on — your future self (still laughing) will thank you.
