Skate into the New Year at Northampton’s Market Square
Posted 10th January 2025If you’re looking for a fun way to shake off those post-Christmas blues, Northampton’s Market Square has just the thing! On Saturday, 18th January, the newly refurbished square will be transformed into a winter wonderland of free activities, perfect for a family day out.
From 11am to 6pm, you can lace up your skates and hit the rink for a day of free winter skating (yes, free!) or try your hand at curling in a dedicated lane just for kids. Never tried curling before? This is your moment.
But it’s not just about gliding on ice—there’s plenty more to keep everyone entertained. The Silent Disco Project will be hosting New Year Party sessions in their pop-up tent (if you haven’t tried a silent disco, trust us, it’s a blast). Meanwhile, Lemonpop Workshops will be running creative ‘Make and Take’ sessions, and budding Picassos can join in by colouring a section of the ‘Winter Wonderland in Northampton’ community canvas.
This one-off event comes courtesy of Northampton Town Council, West Northamptonshire Council, and Northampton Town BID, stepping in after the Becket’s Park Winter Wonderland had to be cancelled over Christmas due to bad weather.
Cllr Jane Birch, Chair of the Community Services Committee at Northampton Town Council, said:
“It’s a quiet time of year, so we’re delighted to offer this free day of skating and activities to help beat the January blues. The newly refurbished Market Square now doubles up as a fantastic events space, and this is the first of many events we’re excited to host here this year.”
Cllr Dan Lister, Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Culture, and Leisure at West Northamptonshire Council, shared in the excitement:
“We’re thrilled to partner with Northampton Town Council and Northampton BID to bring this exciting event to the newly revitalised Market Square. This space has been transformed into a vibrant hub for the community and is perfect for hosting events just like this that the whole family can enjoy.”
Mark Mullen, operations manager at Northampton Town BID, added:
“We’re looking forward to seeing families embracing the chilly weather and enjoying a day of winter activities in the Market Square. January is also a brilliant time to shop local—there are plenty of bargains to be snapped up! Supporting Northampton’s businesses has such a positive impact on the local economy, so we’re encouraging everyone to wrap up warm and show their support.”
