Playing for a Purpose: Local Charity Football Match to Support Sands UK
Posted 7th May 2025
A Northampton dad is turning grief into goals with a special charity football match and family fun day, in memory of his son Tyler and all lost angels.
On Saturday 17th May, Tristan Heard is hosting Sands Aid Family Fun Day and Charity Football Match, a full day of activities to raise money and awareness for Sands UK – the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity.
Tristan became involved with Sands United FC, formed in Northampton for bereaved dads, following the loss of his first child at 38 weeks. Sands United was founded by Pride of Britain winner Robert Allen after the loss of his daughter at 39 weeks. What started as a Sunday league team has grown into a national movement, with over 40 teams across the UK and Ireland, offering support and solidarity through sport.

“Me and my wife lost our son Tyler following an emergency C-section at 38 weeks,” said Tristan. “There was no support, no special space, and I remember having to walk through the maternity ward hearing newborns cry while trying to process what had just happened. As dads, we were expected to be the strong ones, but inside, I was lost.
“Years later, I found Sands United. It helped me open up and gave me a way to grieve and connect with other dads through football. Being part of the team has been a huge part of my healing.
“This match is about raising awareness, showing people that support is out there, and remembering the babies we’ve lost. Even during the 90 minutes of a football game, someone could be going through this and they need to know they’re not alone.
“The support from the local community has been amazing, along with the support of Sands. I’ve done smaller fundraisers but I just felt like they weren’t enough, so I wanted to do something a lot bigger. I started planning this in 2023 and I was aiming for something huge like Soccer Aid. It’s been hard work and has been daunting but I’m hoping it will all pay off!”
The event will see the original Sands United FC take on a Guest 11 made up of ex-Northampton Town players and other familiar faces. Kick-off is at 2pm, but there’s plenty more happening throughout the day.
Expect live music from local band The Bushpigs, a raffle with amazing prizes (including a signed NTFC shirt and a £50 Waitrose voucher), and family fun galore – from face painting and giant games to archery and an RC car challenge!
There’ll be hot food and a licensed bar all coming together to support an incredible cause. All proceeds will go directly to Sands.
