Award-winning Northampton volunteer urges community groups to ‘grow together’ through RHS gardening scheme

An award-winning community gardener from Northampton is calling on local groups to join a national horticultural scheme that offers funding, mentoring, and recognition for sustainable planting projects.
Sandra Robinson, winner of BBC Radio Northampton’s Make a Difference Green Award, runs the Bees Be Happy Community Garden in The Headlands. She is encouraging schools, residents’ associations and community groups to take part in It’s Your Neighbourhood, an initiative from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) delivered locally by Northampton Town Council.
The scheme helps communities transform neglected public spaces into colourful, wildlife-friendly areas. Participating groups can apply for a £200 start-up grant and receive mentoring from experienced gardeners.
Sandra, who was recognised for turning a derelict patch of land into a thriving bee-friendly garden, also represents community gardeners on the Northampton in Bloom Working Group.
“This year a record number of new groups got involved, and we’d love to see even more schools take part,” said Cllr Andy Kilbride, chair of the Environmental Services Committee at Northampton Town Council. “Gardening doesn’t just brighten up our town – it boosts biodiversity, enhances neighbourhoods and supports wellbeing.”
Groups that register receive annual visits from RHS assessors and join a national network of community horticultural projects. Their achievements are celebrated each October at Northampton Guildhall during an awards evening.
Sandra added: “All the projects are different, but they share the same roots – improving our surroundings, supporting wildlife, and creating beautiful spaces for everyone to enjoy.”
The deadline for entries to It’s Your Neighbourhood is 31 May 2026, with judging taking place between June and August.
